Main Street Approach

The Main Street Four Point Approach to downtown revitalization was developed in 1977 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, DC, and tested in pilot locations throughout the United States. In 1985, the Iowa legislature adopted the National Main Street Center's approach to downtown revitalization by approving the establishment of Main Street Iowa within the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED). Story City became a certified Main Street Community in November 2000 and just celebrated their 4th re-certification.

Today, Iowa is one of the most successful Main Street states in the nation. Currently, 34 communities across the state are reaping the benefits of this phenomenal program. Main Street has become the rallying call to bring economic, social, physical and political health back to Iowa's central business districts. With continued determination, Main Street communities will continue to be the crown jewels of Iowa's downtowns. Collectively, Main Street Iowa communities have realized the benefits of thousands of hours of volunteer time committed to improving downtowns, a significantly increased job and business base, and millions of dollars in private investment to purchase, construct and rehabilitate downtown property.

The structure of the Main Street Program is the key to the success of these communities. The following four points are integrated to create a positive, identifiable image for downtown districts.

Volunteers

The Main Street program relies on volunteers and community support in order to stay successful. If you would like to learn more about volunteering or how you can serve your Main Street community, email the Story City Main Street Office at mainstreet@storycity.net
